Manage Your Diabetic Eye Disease with Regular Eye Exams

Diabetes is a systemic disease that impacts the body, including the eyes, in many ways. As such, individuals with diabetes should undergo a comprehensive, diabetic eye exam at least once per year. However, depending on your unique situation, your optometrist may recommend that you have your eyes examined more frequently.

Diabetes & Your Eyes

Did you know that early diabetes can actually be detected during a comprehensive eye exam? That is just one of the many reasons you should visit your optometrist regularly. Additionally, diabetes increases your chances of developing several serious, vision-threatening conditions.

Individuals with diabetes are more likely to develop:

Almost one third of people with diabetes over the age of 40 already exhibit signs of diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy occurs when diabetes damages the delicate blood vessels in our retinas. If this serious condition is not diagnosed and treated in a timely manner, it can lead to permanent vision loss or even blindness.

Though the development of cataracts is a natural part of the aging process, individuals with diabetes are about twice as likely to develop cataracts, and more likely to develop them at a younger age, than individuals without diabetes.

Individuals with diabetes are twice as likely to develop glaucoma than those without diabetes. Glaucoma is a particularly serious condition because it’s most common form (open-angle glaucoma) typically does not exhibit symptoms until permanent peripheral vision loss has already occurred.

Diabetic Eye Exams

Since individuals with diabetes have unique eye health needs, a specialized approach is required. To ensure diabetic eyes get the care and attention they deserve, Associates in Eyecare – Bristow offers eye exams specifically tailored to patients with diabetes.

To help us provide unparalleled care, we use a combination of advanced techniques and cutting-edge technology, including Optos widefield imaging, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and visual field testing.

If you have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, you should undergo a comprehensive diabetic eye exam at least once per year. This holds true even if your blood sugar is under control, and you are not currently experiencing any problems with your sight or overall health.
