Healthy Vision is Key to Your Child’s Development

Good vision plays an essential role in your child’s development. Children rely on their vision to learn and play, so an undiagnosed or untreated vision problem could keep them from reaching their full potential.

Annual eye exams are crucial to your child’s overall wellbeing. Comprehensive eye exams allow your child’s optometrist to detect and track small changes in your child’s vision or eye health that could indicate a problem is forming.

Childhood Vision Problems

Children experiencing vision problems may not know something is wrong. When things are amiss, young children in particular, are not always able to effectively communicate that that there is an issue. It’s up to parents and caregivers to monitor their children and look for signs of vision problems.

Untreated vision problems can hamper your child’s ability to learn, so they must be identified and corrected as soon as possible.

Your child may be experiencing problems with their vision if they:

  • Have a misaligned eye
  • Complain of double vision
  • Frequently cover one eye or tilt their head to one side
  • Sit too close to the TV or whiteboard
  • Squint frequently
  • Frequently rub their eyes
  • Blink excessively
  • Avoid reading or other activities that rely on close vision
  • Avoid detailed tasks
  • Have trouble staying on task
  • Often lose their place while reading
  • Need to rely on a finger to guide them while reading
  • Need to rely on a finger to guide them while reading

If you suspect that your child may be experiencing vision problems, make an appointment with their optometrist as soon as possible.

Children’s Eye Exam Schedule

The American Optometric Association Guidelines recommend that children undergo their first eye exam between the ages of 6 and 12 months old. Children should have their next appointment between the ages of 3 and 5 years old, and should see their optometrist once more before beginning kindergarten.

Once children begin school, they should have their eyes examined at least once per year. However, depending on your child’s unique visual and eye health needs, their optometrist may suggest that they have eye exams more frequently.

For more information about children’s eye health, please speak to your child’s optometrist during their next appointment.
