What are Cataracts?

Cataracts are a gradual “clouding” or your natural lens. While it might seem like a serious condition, cataracts are actually a very normal process in aging.

Patients with cataracts experience vision as if they are seeing through a hazy or frosted over lens, however visual acuity will worsen if the symptoms are allowed to progress.

Types of Cataracts?

Like many eye diseases, cataracts often come with a variety of forms.

Nuclear cataracts directly affects the center of your lens. Symptoms start by causing nearsightedness, but over time the lens will cloud over and affect your vision overall.

Cortical cataracts first affect your vision by forming white wedges around the edges of your lens. As you grow older, the wedges grow over the center of your lens, causing cloudiness.

Congenital cataracts is a form of the disease that occurs when you are born. This form of cataracts could be genetic, but also could stem from a variety of different health conditions like rubella or myotonic dystrophy.

Posterior subcapsular cataracts forms at the back of your lens, directly affecting how light enters your eye. People experiencing this form of cataracts experience symptoms like problems reading, reduced vision in bright light, or even seeing rings or halos around sources of light.

What Can You Do?

There are plenty of ways to treat cataracts. Due to its commonality among patients, a lot of time and resources have been put towards cataracts treatments so patients can continue living with great eyesight.

Over the years, doctors of optometry have developed glasses and contacts to correct vision problems attributed to cataracts. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, doctors can also recommend surgery to alleviate your symptoms.
